You can register to vote online at registertovote.ca.gov, at the DMV, or by completing a paper registration form. The deadline is 15 days before an election. After that, California's Conditional Voter Registration lets you register and vote the same day at any LA County vote center or the county elections office, through Election Day.

In most cases, California voters do not need to show ID. You may be asked for ID only if you are voting for the first time in a federal election, registered by mail or online, and did not give a California ID or Social Security number when you registered. Acceptable ID includes a driver's license or state ID, passport, student or military ID, utility bill, bank statement, or official government mail. Note: Proposition 39 on the November 3, 2026 ballot would require government-issued ID to vote in person.

Yes! Every active registered voter in California is mailed a ballot automatically. You can return it by mail, at any official ballot drop box, or at any vote center in your county.

In LA County you can vote at any vote center, not just one assigned place. Find vote centers and drop boxes near you at lavote.gov. Your sample ballot also lists nearby locations.

Local measures are ballot initiatives specific to your city or county, while propositions are statewide ballot measures. Both allow voters to directly approve or reject laws, taxes, or bond measures.
